What do you think is the best way to do this?

I'm creating an automated function that allows a person to reply to a message board post directly from their e-mail in PHP so you can simply reply to the other person through e-mail while it all still shows up on the board. I'm thinking it would be the best idea to somehow build a bash script that just listens to the mail port and then stores the important info in a file that's read by the PHP front end. The front end would then post the information in a tree like structure. It would be like this board but with the extra ability to post back on the board directly through e-mail after you've gotten an e-mail auto-response.

What do you all think?
