*Do* IDEs necessarily get messages from the compiler?

The compiler can pass a return code back to the operating system, which the IDE could then read and interpret accordingly. I could tell you how to do that with a DOS-based compiler/IDE, but something tells me you wouldn't be interested in that. (You could also have your IDE read messages that the compiler writes to the screen. (Ugh.))
